I will never forget the day I experienced my first underground techno party, the dark basement filled with modular, synthesized beats playing in synch with the strobe. It’s not often my mind is so calm and still, while my body moves to its own will.
On that day, I finally found a place where I was free to express the primal parts of myself I’ve always felt the need to conceal from the societal rat race.
My love for techno was born that day, and events like this allow me to feel at home and embrace every facet of who I am.
It’s my third Future Frequency Festival (FFF) and if you have not been fortunate enough to experience one yet, the name speaks volumes: It’s a space that exists in the frequency of tomorrow. It’s almost unfathomable until you step inside The Factory. Once you do, the machinery layout, chains, and concrete, mixed with the caress of lighting over every inch of the dystopian, post-apocalyptic, and mad-max-themed landscape, makes the unfathomable suddenly real.
What made this installment extra special as it took place during Women’s Month is that half of the lineup was women, something we don't get to see in the events landscape.
Heating the concrete floor early in the evening was Rare Software, Saro, Nátasa, and Aeska B2B with Jaide, getting the energy within spitting distance of that perfect sweet spot, you know, when the energy of the dancefloor is so thick, it becomes almost tangible.
From there, the Queens of ToyToy & Modular took it home and left no emotion untouched in their wake as they delivered a powerful and unforgettable performance, as expected with an Illing and Lady M B2B set but always great to reconfirm their capability of giving the crowd exactly what they need, precisely when they needed it.
Techno may be a male-dominated space, but the tides are slowly changing.
The Femme fatale army appeared in droves, their full characters unlocked while they danced the night way in divine rhythm.
FFF favorites Daryn Steytler and B-type flew the Tenfold banner high, ensuring that the South African Springbok Rugby victories were celebrated with the energy they deserved.
We ended off the night flying with a retrospective jet to indulge in a 3-hour set that the international headliner Slam DJs curated in their years as an experienced duo.
I am always impressed by
The lineup this festival secures.
They are fast becoming a trusted source of quality DJs and producers who have a unique stamp on the genre. The sound is always impeccable and the tight security is welcomed, ensuring the safety of its patrons while creating a space where all people including women can feel free to be themselves and fully immerse in the music that they love.
Thank you,
Future Frequency for yet another stellar event!
~ for allowing me to break free from the rat race and explore myself without losing my sense of safety.
See you again in December!
